Redwood Costs Less Now

Lead Developer @ Redwood

We've been listening to your feedback and have decided to make Redwood more affordable with the following changes:

  • The royalty rate was halved to 2%
  • Royalties are capped at $200k USD per game
  • Royalties are waived for revenue earned prior to a Public Release

We also reintroduced a one-time fee Royalty-Free License for a limited time/quantity! Grab it while it's still available by contacting us.

Royalty Rate Reduced

We priced our original 4% Royalty Rate as a more affordable rate relative to a competing backend solution. However, studios compared our Royalty Rate to Unreal's 5% (and the new 3.5% for the "Launch Everywhere" program), which reasonably made some feel Redwood was overpriced. By halving our Royalty Rate, it will help you reinvest your revenue into the studio while attracting more studios to Redwood. It's a win-win.

Royalty Cap

We're introducing a Royalty Cap of $200k USD. This cap means that once you pay $200k in royalties for a specific game, further revenue for that game will not be royalty-bearing. Other games from your studio will still have royalties.

Royalties are Waived Pre-Public Release

All revenue you earn prior to a game's first Public Release is waived from royalties. Royalty Revenue doesn't start accruing until your game's first Public Release. The goal with this change is to allow you to crowdfund or otherwise fund development of the game without worrying about owing us any of that.

Per the EULA:

A Public Release is any release of a Product, of any condition or maturity, that is generally available to the public which uses any portion of the Licensed Technology. If the release doesn't use the Licensed Technology, it isn't considered as a Public Release. A Public Release is still considered a Public Release if it is later removed/shutdown.

Public Releases include, but are not limited to:

  • Demos
  • Open alpha/beta playtests
  • Early Access releases
  • Standard releases

Royalty-Free License

For a limited time/quantity, we're offering the Royalty-Free License again. This costs a one-time fee of $2,900 and includes source code access. Unfortunately, there is no indie discount for this type of license. With this license you will never owe royalties on any of your projects. Grab it while it's still available by contacting us.

All Changes Apply to All Prior Versions

All of these changes reduce the overall cost of Redwood to studios, so we're applying all of the changes to all versions of Redwood as part of the updated EULA. You do not need to do anything to receive these benefits.
